This folder contains a photocopy of forty-eight pages of Marius Duvall’s diary and a photocopy of an 1846 letter of correspondence. The diary spans April 1846-May 15, 1847 and details his life aboard the ship Portsmouth, including landing in Monterey, CA, on April 22, 1846. The letter was written on October 2, 1846 by Duvall to Thomas Harris, U.S. Navy, Chief of the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery, and details a March 20, 1846 altercation between him, the former Assistant Surgeon, and another man (Duvall was the Assistant Surgeon of the U.S. Navy).

Biographical/Historical note Duvall joined the U.S. Navy circa 1842 and by 1869 had achieved the rank of Commander where he served as Surgeon at Norfolk naval hospital. From 1867-1869 he served on the ship and was indirectly involved in the 1869 imprisonment in of Porter C. Bliss and George F. Masterman in Paraguay.
